project overview

Green Design & Construct was engaged to establish a more structured approach to managing significant vegetation across a major public health precinct.

Previously, tree works were largely reactive, with limited consolidated information available to support forward planning. GDC undertook a detailed precinct-wide audit and partnered with ArborScan to create a live digital record of the tree population, providing a clearer understanding of condition, significance and future management requirements.

Moving from reactive maintenance to proactive management

Managing vegetation across a large operational health precinct requires accurate information, consistent monitoring and the ability to prioritise works over time.

The project needed to account for more than the immediate condition of individual trees. Health, life expectancy, habitat value, native status, preservation requirements, biodiversity and landscape significance all needed to inform the management approach.

By combining arboricultural assessment with digital asset information, GDC established a practical framework for monitoring the tree population, planning future works and communicating management priorities to relevant stakeholders.

The works brought together:

  • A detailed audit of vegetation across entire precinct

  • Recording of more than 400 significant trees

  • Digital mapping of individual vegetation assets

  • Assessment of tree health and life expectancy

  • Recording of habitat, biodiversity and native-status

  • Consideration of preservation and landscape significance

  • Implementation of a live vegetation-management platform process

  • Structured reporting to support forward planning and stakeholder communication

Project outcomes:

The completed program has replaced a largely reactive approach with a more informed and proactive framework for managing significant vegetation across the precinct, including:

  • Greater visibility of the condition and location of the various vegetation assets

  • Improved capacity to prioritise and plan future works

  • More consistent monitoring of tree health, requirements and life expectancy

  • Better-informed preservation and biodiversity decisions

  • Clearer reporting for relevant stakeholders and the wider community

  • More than 400 significant trees now managed and cared for

Build. Maintain. Sustain.

This project demonstrates GDC’s ability to combine arboricultural expertise, asset planning and digital technology within a complex public environment.

By establishing a reliable information base and a structured management framework, GDC has supported more proactive decision-making and the long-term care of a significant tree population.
