project overview

Green Design & Construct was engaged to transform an underutilised area within an operational childcare centre into a versatile outdoor environment supporting a wider range of activities.

Working closely with the client, the team developed a practical design incorporating integrated seating, shade, open activity space and sensory planting.

The completed area provides children and educators with a more functional and engaging setting that can adapt to different forms of play, learning and group activity.

Delivering within an operational environment

The project required a carefully coordinated approach to site access, safety and construction.

All works needed to be completed without disrupting the centre’s normal operations, while remaining considerate of neighbouring properties. Access and built elements also needed to support relevant compliance requirements while delivering an outcome that was durable, practical and appropriate for daily use by children and educators.

GDC planned the works in consultation with the client and scheduled construction outside the centre’s operating hours, including weekend delivery, allowing the centre to continue operating while the area was progressively transformed.

The works brought together:

  • A flexible layout design supporting multiple activities

  • Integrated timber seating and play elements

  • Shaded areas for greater year-round usability

  • Sensory planting to add texture and natural interest

  • Durable materials suited to a high-use environment

  • Site access planned around strict childcare operational and safety requirements

  • Out-of-hours construction to minimise disruption

Project outcomes:

The completed space has given the centre a more attractive and purposeful outdoor environment, turning previously underused land into an adaptable asset for children and staff including:

  • Greater functionality and use of the available outdoor space

  • A safer, more considered setting for structured and informal activities

  • Improved visual appeal

  • Durable construction designed for ongoing daily use

  • Minimal disruption to the centre throughout delivery

Build. Maintain. Sustain.

This project demonstrates GDC’s ability to combine practical design, responsive project management and quality construction within a sensitive, operational environment.

From initial consultation through to completion, the project received direct attention, clear communication and coordinated delivery from one connected team.
